Holly Express is Just the Ticket

When I launched The Holly Post in March of 2008, I did so because with the closing of the Community Voice there was no longer a public opinion forum focused exclusively on the Holly area.  As a columnist for that paper, I had seen how eager residents were to join the debate of our local issues by writing letters to the editor, and later by posting online comments.  Frankly, I wasn’t willing to give up the dialog.  I enjoyed the input, both positive and negative, that I received for ...<< MORE >>

Take a Picture

You may have read in the local papers that the Economic Development Task Force is inviting all interested Holly area residents and stakeholders to participate in a visioning exercise at our next meeting Tuesday, October 6.  You are asked to take photographs of what you love about Holly, and what you, well, don’t like so much.  Think of the two groups of pictures as what works, and what doesn’t; what you’d like to see more of, and what you’d like to see less of.

We will arrange the photographs in two piles, and ...<< MORE >>

Holly Wants You

If any of you have any doubt that the average Holly resident cares about the economic development of the Holly area, just say the words “Beer Company” and see what kind of response you get.  The fact that so many residents are still so outraged that the deal fell through (if there ever really was a deal) is proof that there is a deep, passionate desire to see this area develop appropriately.  We want more choices as consumers, but more importantly, we want to be part of a growing economy.  We want ...<< MORE >>

Fed Up & Filled with Rage

Do you remember the 1976 movie Network, starring Peter Finch as Howard Beale who plays a veteran network anchorman who's been fired because of low ratings? His character's response is to announce he'll kill himself on live television two weeks hence.

What follows, along with skyrocketing ratings, is the anchorman's descent into insanity, during which he rages against the medium that made him a celebrity.  Through it all, Finch urges the viewer to repeat the now-famous mantra "I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not gonna ...<< MORE >>

Emergency Usage:  A New Water Controversy

We all learned in biology class that when resources are scarce, animals compete for survival.  If they don’t kill one another in order to limit the competition, they will at least try to limit the competition’s access to the resources.  Though we would like to think that humans are more civilized and are capable of sharing in the interest of mutual survival, this is sometimes not the case.  The recession is inspiring some interesting battles as communities struggle to make ends meet.

Holly, Get Ready

Two or three weeks ago I wrote a post making the rather obvious argument that most of the Holly area’s woes would be solved if a significant number of new residents moved in.  Among other things, it would have a positive effect on local businesses, schools, property values, and our oversized water bills.  Of course, the problem is that few people are moving anywhere in Michigan because they can’t sell or can’t afford to sell the house they’re in.  And our miserable economy isn’t attracting transplants from other states.

(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Debate, Conflict, and Ideology

Amidst the Obama love fest, we hear lots of talk of a new era of bipartisanship, of reaching across the aisle, of abandoning ideology in favor of cooperation.  This frightens me.  When everyone is in agreement on an issue, I can only think that some point of view is not represented.  Some objection is being suppressed.  A debate that might clarify the issue and strengthen the solution is not being had.

Am I the only one who prefers their leaders a little feisty?  In ...<< MORE >>

First, Define “Need” for Police Protection

“We don’t need it.”  That’s the opinion many in Holly Township have of the issue of police protection.  As we as residents of Holly Township begin the process of analyzing our need for police protection, I ask you to consider first, not whether or not we need it, but what does it mean to “need” it?

Those words were spoken to me just last week by someone who should know a thing or two about Holly area politics.  Somehow I found the words disheartening.  What makes a person a “pro”?  I suppose that refers to those who take a special interest in local government, or to those who are somehow political insiders.   But, we all have a vested interest in the success of this community.  Given our choice of potential community leaders, why wouldn’t every one of us vote?

A Letter from Former Village President Jeff Miller

Hello, fellow Hollyites. It's time for all of us who feel a need to change direction in our Township government to let our voices be heard.

Starting with incumbent Dale Smith, we have a man who highly touts his "experience."  It was this "experience," remember, that refused year after year to take action regarding an arrogant and sub-par tax assessor. It was also "experience" that dilly-dallied far too long in ending the ...

Mr. Smith's Challenge

I read today with great glee that if reelected, one of Holly Township Supervisor Dale Smith’s top three priorities would be to oppose the Village’s attempt to become a City (www.lwvoa.org/files/VG2008PrimaryTwpHolly.pdf). If his track record as Supervisor wasn’t so dismal, especially with the tax assessment debacle that still reverberates through our community, I would consider backing him for another term just to take him up on his challenge.

From the Superintendent by Kent Barnes

Why Budget Cuts are Necessary

Obviously, a great number of realistic concerns exist regarding school district budget and recommendations I make in response to budget needs. Individuals have asked why budget reductions are necessary. The answer is fairly simple. A school district has to live within its means and be prudent with our communities’ tax dollars. Have reductions occurred in previous years?  In 1999, less than six months in our school district, I recommended $787,000 in reductions. A cumulative total of over 10 million dollars of reductions have occurred since my arrival.

Since my first year, with ...

Support the Superintendent

There are over 11,000 households that support the Holly Area Schools with our tax dollars.  I am sure that none of us wants to see people in our community put out of work.  However, we do want to see our hard-earned dollars spent responsibly, and with the greatest possible positive impact on the community.  So when Superintendent Kent Barnes recommended outsourcing social work and food service in an effort to balance the 2008-2009 HAS budget, it didn’t strike me as an offensive suggestion.  I am sure that all of the people who stand to lose ...

Finally, Good News about Water

Sometimes government works exactly as it should.  The people come to a governing body with a concern, those in charge analyze the problem, create solutions, and implement them.  Nine months after the shocking fifty-four percent water rate increase caused public outrage, the Public Works Committee of the Village Council, comprised of Chairman Don Winglemire, Village President Pete Clemens, and Council Member Bill Kuyk, along with Interim Village Manager Marsha Powers and Department of Public Works Director Marv Swanson, arrived at three satisfactory solutions for easing the burden of our large ...

Another Voice for City-Hood

I was glad to see all of the discussion about cityhood.  I am in favor of cityhood and have been
for over three decades.  It is time the Village of Holly moved into the present and looked to the future.  It
is time we unshackle ourselves from the Township.

We have some duplication of services.  The Village and Township, while not totally, are at odds most of the time.  The Village of Holly is stymied.

One of the biggest issues is that the Township has divided loyalties.  What is ...

The Case for City-Hood

As the Village of Holly struggles along with our neighbors to ride out the recession that currently grips the state of  Michigan, it becomes sensible that we revisit the idea of becoming a home ruled city.  Over the next year the Village Council will begin to look at ways to reduce the overall tax burden on the residents of the Village, in an attempt to make the Village a more competitive and desirable location for new residential and commercial development. Along with reducing taxes, the Village must find other ways to ...

A Strong Start for The Post

The Holly Post debuted with a bang.  We had 237 hits on our very first day, just one week ago.  This is a very positive sign about the care and concern residents have for our one-of-a-kind community.  I am hopeful that those of you who have taken a look at our blog will tell others that there is a new place for us to share ideas and opinions about life in greater Holly.

I am also hopeful that more of you will take advantage of the opportunity to speak to your friends, neighbors, and leaders by commenting on the entries published ...

State Your Name, Protect the Charter

After my first column for the Holly Post, I received advice from someone who gave only an e-mail name.  I find that a bit disconcerting.  Free speech, freedom of thought, and the right to dissent are sacred in America.  But it bothers me when people don't put their real name on something.

Popular or unpopular, I put my name on what I write.  If you're going to take on a government, or an official, or a policy, have the courage to put your name on it.  I take tough stands, ask ...

Two Wars, Separated by History

A funny thing happens once you've lived long enough to see current events fade from public consciousness, and then gradually reemerge as history.  You begin to see how this process filters our collective memory of our shared experiences like the softening effect of Vaseline on a camera lens.

When I was a freshman in high school, in 1982, I took an elective social studies course called "Peoples and Their Cultures".  We studied four regions of the world:  Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and the Soviet Union.  I recall that the last ...

Your Opinion Here

Thank you for taking a look, and thus participating in this new endeavor.  In the unfortunate absence of a newspaper dedicated to covering greater Holly, this blog has been launched to provide a forum for discussion of the issues that concern our community most.

Glance at the sidebar, and you will see some familiar names.  Mr. Joe Mishler has kindly agreed to publish his very popular column, "Mishler's Stage" here.  I will continue to publish my "Junctions" column on these pages.  I have added a section called "Leader Posts" which will feature the views of our local civic leaders.  This ...

Phase One, Fire Collaboration Plan

This past Tuesday the Holly Village Council adopted phase one of the “Northwest Oakland County Fire Collaboration Plan”. This collaboration is a joint effort between the Townships of Groveland, Holly, Rose, Springfield, and the Village of Holly.

The Northwest Oakland County Fire Collaboration study was administered by Plante & Moran and was paid for by a grant from the State of Michigan and Oakland County. The goal of the collaboration was to find ways to save money through joint administration and/or collaboration of the regional fire authorities.

Catching Up

I was saddened by the loss of the Holly Community Voice.  It was truly the voice of the people in our community.  Some politicians referred to it as a gossip paper, but it was always on target.  Rarely did the writers miss the real point or fail to point it out.

Now, I am writing with Janet Leslie and her blog.  I urge you to pass on these articles to as many people as you can.

One of my last columns that wasn’t published in the HCV had to do with all of ...

Water Torture

Ever since the fifty-four percent water rate increase last June, my neighbors and I have been asking what can be done about the high cost of water service in this communtiy.  We understand why the rates had to go up.  We have been told that the improvements made to the system had to be made to comply with state standards, regardless of the addition of more water customers.  We have also been told that rates, even without calculating the cost of the improvements, had not been raised to keep up with rising costs over the ...

This Is Not a Sex Scandal

Can we all agree not to refer to every political scandal involving a man and woman as a "sex scandal"?  The recent news about New York Governor Eliot Spitzer's patronage of an elite escort service was not a sex scandal, though it was called that by nearly every media outlet.  It was a scandal involving the Governor of New York allegedly committing, not just a crime, but a crime associated with organized crime, which is exactly the kind of thing one would think the Governor of ...<< MORE >>
